History
Kielder Belvedere was designed by Softroom. Construction completed in 1999. It marked the first architectural commission for Kielder. The structure received a RIBA Award and a Civic Trust award in 2000. It was also shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize.
Architecture
The structure is contemporary in style. It forms a truncated triangle. Stainless steel comprises the main construction. A coloured glass canopy features overhead. Kielder Belvedere serves as a shelter for walkers and a ferry waiting point.
Setting
The Belvedere stands at Benny Shank on the north shore of Kielder Water. It is within Kielder Forest National Park, Northumberland. The structure forms part of an extensive art and architecture trail. A remote, rugged forest environment surrounds the site. From this position, vast panoramic views extend across the water, reflecting the strong light of the open landscape.
