History
Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects designed the Hut on Sleds. Its completion was in 2011. The design interprets coastal erosion zone regulations. It received the 2014 Architizer A+ Award. The structure serves as a model for climate-adaptive design.
Architecture
The Hut on Sleds exhibits a naturalistic, site-responsive style. It features macrocarpa cladding, timber, steel, and glass construction. Flat sheet material forms parts of the exterior. The structure rests on two thick wooden sleds. This allows for relocation. The house measures 431 square feet. It accommodates a family of five.
Setting
The house is situated on a white-sand dune at Whangapoua. This is on New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula. The site lies within a designated coastal erosion zone. The design anticipates structure removal or relocation. Light shifts with the ocean's rhythm.
