History
Concept for Diogene began in the early 2000s. Renzo Piano Building Workshop initiated collaboration with Vitra in 2010. The structure was unveiled in June 2013 at Art Basel. It is an experimental prototype for off-the-grid living.
Architecture
The minimalist structure employs cross-laminated timber and brushed aluminium panels. It features triple-glazed windows. Diogene measures 2.5m by 3m, with a ridge height of 2.3m. The cabin weighs 1.2 tonnes. It is designed as a self-sufficient, transportable unit.
Setting
Diogene stands on a hill on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany. It is positioned between the VitraHaus and the Dome. The self-sufficient cabin requires only a small ground footprint. It reflects the changing light of the German landscape.
