History
The Exbury Egg is a 2013 collaborative project. PAD Studio, SPUD Group, and artist Stephen Turner conceived the structure. Local boat-builder Paul Baker constructed the vessel. It served as an off-grid art and research residency for artist Stephen Turner for one year. The project later toured as an exhibition.
Architecture
The structure takes a biomorphic form. It measures approximately 6 meters long, with a diameter of 2.8 to 3 meters. Reclaimed cedar and locally-sourced Douglas Fir compose its main shell. Glass epoxy reinforces the hull. The design is off-grid, powered by solar energy.
Setting
The Exbury Egg floats on the Beaulieu River. This location lies within a tidal estuary. It occupies a sensitive conservation area of the New Forest, Hampshire, UK. The structure rises and falls with the daily tides, reflecting the changing light of the estuary.
