History
MVRDV designed the Balancing Barn. It completed in 2010. This was the debut project for Living Architecture. The house earned the Brit Insurance Award, Red Dot Award, and Dutch Design Award in 2011.
Architecture
The structure is a 30-meter-long contemporary form. Half its length, 15 meters, cantilevers over the landscape. It balances on a central concrete core. Lighter materials form the cantilevered section. The exterior features reflective steel tiles. These tiles mirror the changing seasons. Interior walls and ceilings are ash-lined. Furnishings are bespoke by Studio Makkink & Bey.
Setting
The Barn is in the English countryside near Thorington, Suffolk. It borders a tranquil nature reserve. A small lake sits nearby. The site slopes. This allows the house to cantilever dramatically. Views extend from ground level to tree height. Light changes with the mirrored surface, reflecting the day's progression.
Specifications
Area: 1076 sqft. Category: Vacation. The house sleeps eight guests. It is highly insulated. A ground source heat pump provides heating.
