History
Fala Atelier renovated an old granite shack in 2018. The project introduced a skinny chimney-style tower for a bathroom and shower. This structure stands in paradoxical independence, making a courageous formal statement.
Architecture
Original large granite walls form the base of the structure. A new thin metal roof covers the house. Teal window frames and a teal roof underside mark new interventions. White walls and striped wooden floors define interior spaces. The addition of a tower provides a bathroom program. Its exterior features an ambiguous pattern of white and pink triangles. Fala Atelier describes this as "a monumental object for a non-monumental program."
Setting
The house sits within an old granite shack at the end of a garden patio in Amarante, Portugal. The living area occupies the ground floor, relating to the surrounding gardens. The bedroom fits under the sloped roof, facing views. Natural light permeates the connection to the surrounding green.
Specifications
The total floor area is 55 m². The ground floor contains the living area. The upper floor houses the bedroom. A dedicated skinny chimney-style tower contains the bathroom and shower facilities.
