History
The Glass House was designed by architect Philip Johnson. Construction finished in 1949. It stands as a masterwork of the International Style.
Architecture
The structure measures 55 feet long by 33 feet wide. Exterior walls are glass and charcoal-painted steel. An open plan contains no interior walls. A brick cylinder houses a bathroom and fireplace. This design challenges traditional enclosure.
Setting
The house sits on a promontory, overlooking a pond. It occupies a 49-acre pastoral landscape in New Canaan, Connecticut. Meadows, ponds, and woods define the site. The structure is largely invisible from the road. Light shifts across the glass walls, marking the passage of day.
