History
Construction of Casa Malaparte began around 1937. It completed in 1943. Adalberto Libera designed initial plans. Creator Curzio Malaparte extensively modified these plans. Malaparte referred to the house as 'a self-portrait in stone'. The house appeared in Jean-Luc Godard's 1963 film, *Contempt*. It was donated to the Giorgio Ronchi Foundation in 1972.
Architecture
Casa Malaparte stands as an example of Italian Rationalism. The structure uses red masonry, stone, and tufa stone. Large glass sections are present. Its form is unique among modern Italian design.
Setting
The house sits on Punta Massullo, an isolated promontory on Capri's eastern side. It perches 32 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea, overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. Access is by foot over private property or by boat. A staircase cut into the cliff provides the final approach. Light from the sea fills the interior spaces.
