History
Musician Håvard Lund commissioned Fleinvær Refugium. Rintala Eggertsson Architects and TYIN tegnestue Architects designed the artist residency. Construction completed in 2017. The project developed through four design-build workshops. It comprises nine individual structures.
Architecture
Nine individual structures form the residency. Unfinished timber is the primary material. Steel columns and tension cables provide structural support. One structure features an exoskeleton of red steel girders. Foundations use steel columns curved at 15 degrees. Materials transported manually to the island.
Setting
The site is in the remote Fleinvær archipelago, within the Arctic Circle. Gildeskål Municipality, Nordland, Norway. The terrain is sensitive, rugged, and windswept. The Lofoten mountain chain provides a majestic backdrop. Arctic light illuminates the landscape.
Specifications
Total floor area is 123 m². The nine structures minimize site impact. The project serves as an important income source for the local community.
