History
Architect António Fernandes designed the Ecocubo project. It was built in 2017. The project developed in collaboration with the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto (UPTEC). It received the BIG SEE Tourism Design Award in 2022.
Architecture
The Ecocubo is a prefabricated micro-house. Construction uses locally sourced wood and cork. Units assemble on-site in two weeks. Each unit operates off-grid. The design supports sustainable living.
Setting
Ecocubo units are placed in strategic, low-density territories. These include mountains, rooftops, and vineyards across Portugal, such as Porto, Valongo, and Tabuaço. They foster immersion in nature. Light filters through natural surroundings, marking the passage of the day.
Specifications
Models range from 9 square meters (97 sq ft) to 16 square meters (172 sq ft). Each unit accommodates two people. It is designed for off-grid operation.
