History
The Alex-A Guesthouse was commissioned by Alex, a client in the film industry. Atelier Vens Vanbelle designed the structure, completed in 2020. It provides space for international guests and film previews. The guesthouse was constructed in four pieces off-site and reassembled in Berlare, Belgium.
Architecture
The structure presents an abstract form. Materials include Corten steel, laminated wood, and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). An underground passage leads to a small cinema hall. This section features a green roof, created by raising the surrounding ground. The interior is formed from 4cm thick laminated wood. A spiral staircase ascends to a round watchtower, providing views. The total project area spans 150 m².
Setting
The guesthouse occupies a secluded corner within a villa's garden in Berlare, Belgium. The site presents a view of a castle and abuts the Schelde river. Guests approach through an underground passage. Light filters through the structure, revealing the surrounding romantic garden.
