History
Stefan Eberstadt designed the Rucksack House. It was first realized in Leipzig in 2004. This mobile structure addresses urban challenges of flexibility. The project gained public attention. It was featured at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
Architecture
The Rucksack House is a parasitic structure. It features a welded steel cage. Birch veneered plywood and exterior grade plywood form the shell. An absorbent resin surface covers the exterior. Plexiglas inserts provide light. Interior walls contain fold-down furnishings; a desk and shelves are present.
Setting
The structure suspends from existing building facades. Steel cables anchor it to the roof or facade. It has been installed in German cities including Cologne and Leipzig. It creates the impression of floating above public space.
Specifications
The house measures 2.50 m x 2.50 m x 3.60 m. It provides 9 square meters of additional living space. Total area is 97 sqft.
