History
House in Takatsuki was designed by Tato Architects, led by Yo Shimada. Construction completed in 2018. This structure expands on earlier concepts, including the "House in Miyamoto" experiment.
Architecture
The three-story structure presents a minimalist form. Tato Architects incorporated blackened wood, wood, concrete, and steel. It contains 16 distinct floor levels. Movement between levels occurs via wooden blocks, shelves, and furniture; no traditional staircases are present.
Interior partition walls are set at 45-degree angles to the exterior. This diagonal grid creates a complex internal volume. Architect Yo Shimada noted: "By overlaying a diagonal grid rotated at 45 degrees on top of a rectangular shell, we attempted to create a simple yet complex, geographical and cave-like labyrinth captured inside a small house."
Setting
The house stands in Takatsuki, Osaka, Japan, within a suburban residential neighborhood. The site sits on a slope. Neighboring ground levels are uneven or terraced. The structure rises from its terraced plot, echoing the shifting ground.
Specifications
Total floor area measures 96 m². The house comprises three stories. Sixteen distinct floor levels are present.
