History
The El Aleph Guesthouse was designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects. Construction completed in 2023. It forms part of a three-building coastal property.
This 28-foot cube stands elevated on stilts. Its design addresses coastal weather and rising sea levels. The name references Jorge Luis Borges's story "El Aleph".
Architecture
The structure presents as a 28-foot pure cube. It embodies principles of economy and place, maximizing experience with minimal form. Its design resonates with local vernacular fishing shacks.
The guesthouse employs a minimal material palette. Steel, leaded copper shingles, and glass define the exterior. Shiplap wood and concrete complete the interior finishes.
Setting
The guesthouse occupies a highly exposed, sloping promontory in Port L'Hebert, Nova Scotia. Weathered granite bedrock characterizes the site. It abuts the Atlantic Ocean, facing extreme weather and high winds.
The elevated position provides commanding 360-degree views of the ocean and landscape. It presents a profound solitude, illuminated by the vast coastal light.
Specifications
El Aleph Guesthouse holds a floor area of 139 square meters. It exists as a built structure, a pure 28-foot cube. The structure is elevated on stilts.
