History
The Curtain Wall House was built in 1995 by Shigeru Ban Architects. It is known as Case Study House 07. The residence was designed for photographer Mr. Takeshi. This project reinterprets traditional Japanese interior-exterior spatial continuity, extending Mies van der Rohe's curtain wall concept.
Architecture
The structure is a modern reinterpretation of traditional Japanese architecture. It employs steel and reinforced concrete. A large tent material curtain defines the exterior. Operable glass doors and a white painted deck contribute to its form. Two-story movable curtains are featured on the east and south sides. These elements blur inside and outside boundaries, creating flexible, open spaces.
Setting
The house sits on a 110 m² corner site in Tokyo's Itabashi-Ku neighborhood. It creates a sense of space within the bustling city. Light filters through the operable elements, engaging with the urban environment.
