History
YUUA Architects and Associates designed this house in 2012. Madoka Aihara served as lead architect. It stands as an example of kyo-sho-jutaku, or ultra-compact housing. The design was for a couple and their two cats. The interior width is 1.8 meters.
Architecture
The house employs steel-frame construction. Its form creates expansive, fluid living spaces. Split-level floating floors and large openings define the interior. Materials include laminated scaffolding planks, stone-infused paint, and extruded cement boards. The design fosters fluidity of interior space.
Setting
The house occupies an 'eel's bed' plot in Toshima, central Tokyo. This dense urban shopping street site measures 2.5 meters wide and 11 meters deep. The design maximizes light and air within its narrow confines.
Specifications
Total floor area measures 80.4 m². The site area is 29.28 m². An interior width of 1.8 meters defines the structure. Steel frame construction supports the dwelling.
